History

The lidR package was initially developed at Laval University in Québec during my PhD and continued to evolve over the past 10 years during my postdoctoral and as a research associate (2014-2024). The more recent lasR package was also created at Laval University (2024). Both projects are free and open source and were funded through research grants and the free time I was able to allocate in addition to my research.

Over the past decade, I dedicated a significant time to assist users on the internet through platforms like GitHub, Stack Overflow, and personal email, all without direct compensation.

However, with the cessation of my position at Laval University, the funding for lasR and lidR is no longer assured, and this level of free support is unsustainable. The time I previously allocated, funded by the university, can no longer be offered for free. Despite these changes, lidR and lasR will remain free and open source, ensuring continued access and contribution to the LiDAR community.

To continue working on lidR and lasR sustainably, I am now a self-employed consultant offering training courses, consulting, and programming services. This allows me to continue developing lidR and lasR and maintain other LiDAR-related tools. If you are a user of lidR or lasR, you can also
